Starting a book for me is always a very random process. I find inspiration in odd things like song lyrics or comments on the radio or bits of conversations I hear when I’m running errands. Nothing ever goes according to plan for me…I write out a list of what I want to write and my characters giggle and do their own thing. In early October as I was finishing the last book for Leon and Morgan, I started poking at several ideas and I told myself I was going to write a new Beautiful Shame book. Picking one work-in-progress to tell you about isn’t reasonable because I’m working on several things and they’re all at different stages…so I’m going to tell you about a few of the stories. Leon (Destin’s roommate from The Only Way to Dream) is getting his own book and his life has taken an interesting turn. Destin is now living with his guys—and we’re just going to say that the new guy who moved into the dorms with him when Destin left was not the easiest to live with. Sometimes side characters just slip right by you while you’re reading or writing, completely unnoticed, and other times they won’t get out of your head. A few of my favorite reoccurring characters started out life as side characters I thought would just quietly pass through a chapter and would never be seen again, like Dr. Sheppard who eventually got his own book (Rethinking Fate). I have to say last week was one of the hardest weeks in a very long time. On the 10th my friend, and the narrator who has done all my audiobooks to date, passed away suddenly. I first met him when I was looking to get Secrets in the Dark put into audiobook. I’d had a terrible time finding any narrators who wanted to take a chance on the book.
