My Ah-ha Moment When Writing The Original Bound and Controlled Series – Plus New Personality Quizzes!

When I first started writing, I was a teacher with a long, painfully boring commute through the middle of nowhere. So I would spend the drive back and forth dreaming about stories and planning what I would write.

My writing time was in short bits normally early in the morning, so I could get in a few hundred words before I had to get my kids up for the day. Since there was very little time to dawdle when I sat down to write, I planned things out in my head as I drove.

I knew I wanted to do a series, but I wasn’t sure what it should look like or who they would be until one morning on my way to work. As I was driving down the main street in my little town, I passed by a local insurance company and it clicked. I can still picture where I was when I had that ah-ha moment.

Suddenly I knew who they were and what they were doing, and I remember being so frustrated that I couldn’t pull over and write it all down.

I made random, rambling notes into the recorder app on my phone, and then when I got to school, I scrambled to write down as many ideas as I could so I didn’t lose them. Needless to say, after a few more days of driving, I knew all about the brothers and started working my way through their partners.

The insurance part really clicked because before I was a teacher, I sold insurance for several years. I could almost see the guys in my imagination shaking their heads because they thought it should’ve been obvious what they did for a living.

The original Bound & Controlled series is based around four brothers who are all looking for love and all into BDSM in some way. They were so much fun to write because they pick at each other and tease, but you can see that family is important to them.

The new series, Tender Control, is taking us back to the Bound & Controlled club and there are fun cameos from the original couples as well as the owners of the club, Ben and Conner. If you haven’t read the first series, this is the perfect time to catch up, but it’s not necessary to enjoy the new books.

And if you’ve already read the books, have fun taking the quizzes that will tell you which brother or partner you’re most like. This was so much fun to put together—I hope you enjoy it. (if I get a good response to the quizzes, I might do some for other books, just saying)

Inspiration for a New Sub

Starting a book for me is always a very random process. I find inspiration in odd things like song lyrics or comments on the radio or bits of conversations I hear when I’m running errands. Sometimes it’s a picture, but not very often. Usually finding a picture that fits my idea of who the characters are comes late in the process. But once in a while, that changes.

A few weeks ago I was browsing through Facebook and I saw a premade cover (a book cover a designer had put together randomly and not for any specific author) and I knew he was one of my guys. But I didn’t know what I was going to do with him.

I had a list of ideas I wanted to write for next year, but I told myself he didn’t fit anything I’d already planned—I was wrong.

I was sitting down at a bakery a few days later, escaping my house for lunch, and I had my notebooks spread out all over the table. As I started to look at one series in particular (my new series around the Bound & Controlled club), I realized that was where my new guy belonged.

The sexy, tattooed cutie with a bit of a piercing smile is going to be a sub in the new series…he just doesn’t know he’s a sub yet.

But I’ve got the perfect Dom in mind for him, and the whole series is going to be fabulous to write because I’ll get to go back and touch base with the fun guys from the original Bound & Controlled series. The first book should be out early next year—February, I think. I can’t wait to show you what I have planned.
