Rethinking Fate Prologue

Prologue

Miles

“You ask him. You’re the one who’s curious.” Bryan’s whispered voice held an edge of panic, but since it was Kevin egging him on, I thought that was to be expected.

“But you’re the one who’s little, so you should ask.” Kevin seemed to be trying to convince Bryan that his logic was sound, but there was obviously some debate over that.

“This isn’t my idea. I don’t even know why I’m listening to you.” Bryan’s voice was clearly stressed but since he seemed more likely to hit Kevin than pass out, I didn’t step in. “You’re a nuisance, and I’m going to tell Jeremy you’re driving me crazy.”

Kevin just giggled. “Good, I haven’t been spanked in days.”

Bryan groaned. “I don’t need to know that.”

Kevin giggled again.

“Let’s just go.” Evidently whatever Kevin was trying to talk Bryan into wasn’t sounding like such a good idea anymore.

But Kevin was persistent.

“You’re going to feel ridiculous if you chicken out now.” There was a pause, and I knew more than likely Kevin had hugged his still-nervous friend. “Besides, it’s just a question, it’s not like you have to do anything.”

“But what if he thinks it’s stupid or too personal?” Bryan’s voice dipped quieter, but I heard his nerves even more clearly.

“Then he’ll politely tell us that, but the chances of that are slim. We’re not asking about him, just about it in general.”

Now they both had me curious.

Bryan sometimes stayed late at the end of the day and came in to talk to me about things because it generally took him a while to work up to it. He wasn’t technically my patient anymore, but he needed someone to talk to occasionally. Bryan was so much more confident about what he wanted and who he was than when I’d first met him, but sometimes his worries still got the best of him.

Kevin, on the other hand, loved dragging him out of his shell.

Sometimes they were an odd match for best friends, but they complemented each other perfectly. Each didn’t judge the other; they even helped bring out each other’s best qualities.

“This is stupid.” Bryan sighed.

Evidently Kevin had won.

I turned back to my desk, pretending to focus on the blank paperwork in front of me as a knock sounded and Kevin’s head popped around the door. He gave me an innocent smile that I’d very early on learned was completely fake. “Do you have a moment?”

“Of course.” Sometimes keeping a neutral expression around them was entirely too difficult.

“Great.” As he stepped into the room, I saw that he had a death grip on Bryan’s hand and was visibly dragging him into the room. But since I’d seen Bryan stand up to his overbearing best friend before, I wasn’t worried for him—Kevin’s health was clearly in jeopardy, however.

Bryan looked like he wanted to deck him.

Miles and his Daddy

I hope you’ve been enjoying Jay and Logan in Untouched. Jay is the most innocent and least worldly character I’ve written, but his internal monologue is so funny. I love characters with a unique perspective, and those two are both so interesting.

Another character with a very different perspective that’s getting his own book soon is Dr. Sheppard. When he first popped up in Secrets in the Dark, I never expected readers to be so curious about him. Once he showed up in the Pieces series and in the Loving series (the Too Close books), it was time to give him his own story.

His book, Rethinking Fate, will be out on April 19. The preorder for Rethinking Fate will be up on April 14. It has some fun cameos from people you’ve met before, and while most of the book takes place ten years in the past, it opens and closes in the present to give you a peek into what Dr. Sheppard is thinking when he talks to Bryan and Kevin. I’m so excited for this book to come out so you can finally get to know Miles and his Daddy.

Release Day… Untouched

It’s release day for Jay and Logan in Untouched. I can’t wait for you to meet them. I love the idea that opposites attract, and these two are clearly very different but end up having so much in common. Check out the first chapter if you’re curious about my new pup.

Jay…coming soon!

Less than a week to go until you meet Jay. He started out as a random side character and surprised me with how awkward he was. When he showed up in the Pieces series, something about him seemed more lost than my usual characters. Getting to know him and seeing what he’d been going through was an interesting journey.

Jay’s book, Untouched, comes out on Friday, and I have to say that while he’s so funny, it’s a bit sad to see how completely confused he is at the beginning of the book. I can’t wait for you to meet him, and I’m curious to see what you think.

If you want to see the college world through Jay’s eyes, check out the first chapter of Untouched.

Untouched Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Jay

“Man, he shoved that beer can of his so far up my ass. It was incredible.” The crass words made me blush, but they also didn’t make sense.

Why would he want a beer can shoved up his…butt?

The half-drunk guy that was stretched out on the common room couch answered my unasked question. “It was great, but I’m just saying that thing was so thick I’ve been walking funny for days. Man, no more tops with dicks that wide. I’ll take a nice long thin one any day.”

Ohhh.

“You’re such a slut.” The other voice that seemed to be coming from the floor didn’t consider that a bad thing, if I read his tone of voice right. He seemed to think couch guy was funny. But I could have misunderstood.

I wasn’t a moron, but people’s reactions, especially to sexual things…confused me.

Like, why were they even talking about it at all? The middle of the common room in the dorms wouldn’t have been my first choice of locations to have that kind of discussion. Especially when there seemed to be endless parties going on. Not that I would have talked about something like that with someone anyway.

But still…a beer can?

I couldn’t stop my mind from trying to picture what he was talking about. I imagined a beer can on the old statues I’d seen pictures of, but my brain had other ideas. It immediately changed the cold marble to Logan. My roommate.

I shouldn’t know what he looked like naked, but I did.

I’d been raised with the idea that once you were old enough to take care of yourself in the bathroom, being naked was only acceptable if it was with your spouse, but no one else seemed to follow those rules. People walked around the dorms half-clothed on a regular basis—and then there were people like Logan.

He was naked constantly.

What could I do?

He’d clearly been raised with the idea that being naked was…appropriate. My parents had always said that we didn’t judge and must accept others for what they believed, but I wasn’t sure they’d meant things like this.

Naked strangers.

Sex talk.

Weird sex talk.

And naughty things under the bed.
